A Sad Day for Shell-shocked Britain

12 Jan

Today, as a known out-and-proud lover of Crème Eggs, it was brought to my attention by a dear friend that the chocolate around the Cadbury’s Crème Egg has been changed.

“It’s no longer Dairy Milk. It’s similar, but not exactly Dairy Milk. We tested the new one with consumers. It was found to be the best one for the Creme Egg, which is why we’ve used it this year,” – Kraft spokesperson

Emergency Purchase
Not one to just believe everything I read without a proper scientific study I rushed out to buy half a dozen for a good old fashioned taste test (or two). However, economic austerity has meant that the six pack of Crème Eggs, although in the same size and shape box, is now a five pack for the same price!

“Dear Americans,
Half a dozen is six, not five.
Eggs have been sold this way for years.
Just sayin’
The UK.”

Half_a_dozen

One question burning on my mind is: what’s happening with the dozen/12 pack? 10? 11? Should I hold my breath for a baker’s dozen?

I think with the economic climate I could have forgiven this if they’d bothered to redesign the box, but it’s in the same packaging as though they’re trying to take us for fools that there are still six inside. And this comes on the back of the 3 chocolate bars in a multipack, which are half the size as they should be – they’re almost as small as lunchbox sized treats!

But I can’t forgive this packaging money-making cut when they’ve also changed the recipe to use a cheaper chocolate! When Cadbury’s took over in 2010 they PROMISED they wouldn’t change the recipes! I don’t think they realise that this chocolate is so closely linked to our culture, our lives, our seasons and our festive celebrations that there’s no way they could get away with this! You don’t understand your market or the people who have been loyal to the nation’s chocolate for all these years. You PROMISED not to change the recipe.

The Taste Test
As usual I had my CCE with a lovely, strong cup of tea. Upon dipping the tip of the egg and biting into it I had my initial doubts because I was worried it tasted different but tried to keep those thoughts at the back of my mind as I told myself if was just all of the hype that made it taste so.

I nibbled down the chocolate so that it was a flat cup containing what still looked like the liquid, gooey fondant of the gods. When the chocolate was mingling with the fondant, however, the chocolate seemed to taste sweeter than usual somehow. It’d lost its smooth creaminess. Now as a fan of CCEs I’m sure you can appreciate I have quite a sweet tooth but the chocolate usually adds a different layer to the tastes.

I removed all of the fondant from the ‘cup’ of my egg and then came the trauma. My last bite of crème egg is usually finishing off the joy with a little mouthful of Dairy Milk coating your mouth with that taste we all know and love and washing it down with my tea. This was the worst part of the taste test and up to this point I’d still been on the fence, but I’m afraid it’s true. The crème egg has indeed been ruined!

Goodbye Creme Egg as we know it, we’ll always remember you!

Note: I’m sure if you eat your crème eggs whole the taste can’t be that much different.

In Conclusion
